Program Goals
General
Goals
- Develop English skills in reading,
writing, listening and
speaking so students can enter a Western
university at
the undergraduate or graduate level.
- Build an awareness of the
expectations these Western universities have of students.
- Prepare
students to meet these expectations, particularly in the areas of:
critical
thinking, classroom participation, study and learning
habits,
and test-taking strategies.
- Develop sustained and life-long
language learning strategies.
Reading
- Prepare students for the large amount of reading required
at university, and the need to read quickly.
- Develop effective note-taking and memory strategies while
reading.
- Build receptive vocabularies and the ability to guess from
context.
- Encourage critical reading, and the ability to integrate
new
ideas with existing knowledge.
Writing
- Build confidence in writing to an academic
standard.
- Develop an understanding of writing as a means of learning,
and of demonstrating learning.
- Prepare effective test-taking and examination strategies.
- Explore academic genres, especially the term paper and post-graduate thesis.
Listening
- Develop skills to isolate key words and identify core ideas.
- Increase receptive vocabulary, especially in academic
settings.
- Enhance students' ability to apply prior knowledge and
learning to the current situation.
- Provide
a range of realistic listening challenges, including different English
accents and live
lectures on new subject matters.
Speaking
- Build speaking confidence in and out of the
classroom.
- Develop strategies for explaining ideas and supporting
opinions.
- Increase vocabulary including common idioms and academic
words.
- Provide effective communication strategies for use on and off the campus.
Life Skills
- Prepare students for life both on and off the campus.
- Develop strategies for coping with foreign cultures and
foreign contacts.
- Enhance students' ability to interact in social settings;
including discussions with professors, VIPs and friends.
- Build the capacity for life-long learning in all subject
areas.
Study Skills
- Develop research and bibliographic skills for both the
Library and Internet.
- Enhance students' ability to isolate and remember key facts
and concepts.
- Encourage the development of cross-linked ideas in different disciplines of study.
- Build effective note-taking strategies for
lectures and seminar discussions.
