TEACHING AT AUA HAT YAI

The AUA Hat Yai Branch was established in 1988, in cooperation with the Prince of Songkla University (PSU). We utilize seven classrooms located at the Faculty of Management Science buildings on weekday evenings and during the day on weekends. All classrooms are well lit, roomy, air-conditioned, and equipped with a large whiteboard. There is a small teachers lounge where teachers prepare their lessons or just relax. Appliances such as a refrigerator, tape player, and electric kettle are available for teachers' use. There is also a teachers' resource area containing supplementary materials and supplies, and a small ESL/EFL library.

The administrative office, which is separate from the classrooms and teachers lounge, is located in the Main Cafeteria and Student Union building. It is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM. The administrative office is a venue where the public can call upon the branch manager and clerical staff and where students can apply, register for class, and buy books.

The majority of the 400 or so students at the Hat Yai branch are Prince of Songkla University students, unemployed graduates, employed people, or tertiary students, ranging in age from 16 to 40. The students tend to be very enthusiastic, reacting positively to communicative teaching techniques and activities involving an element of fun.

The regular language program at Hat Yai is identical to the one offered in Bangkok. The Regular Course program is a 15-level multi-skill course designed to bring students to an upper-intermediate standard of English proficiency. There are also special courses which focus on specific language skills or purposes including General Writing, Test of Written English (TWE) Preparation, TOEFL Preparation, Listening and Speaking, Pronunciation Clinic, and Communicative Grammar. Special courses provide an opportunity to supplement study in the regular program and to continue study after level 15. Each course has prerequisite entrance requirements. Our schedule of classes is as follows:

  • Four day-a-week course, conducted one hour and fifteen minutes per day, Monday to Thursday evenings starting at 5:15 PM, 6:30 PM, and 7:45 PM.

  • Two day-a-week course, conducted two and a half hours per day, either Monday and Wednesday evenings or Tuesday and Thursday evenings starting at 6:30 PM.

  • Weekend program, conducted two and a half hours per day, both Saturday and Sunday, starting at 9:00 AM, 12:15 PM, and 2:45 PM.

The AUA Hat Yai calendar is divided into seven, six-week, Monday to Thursday, and Saturday and Sunday terms. Each is followed by a one-week interim break except at Songkran - Thai New Year, 1st semester PSU final exams, and Christmas, when there is a two-week interim break.

All teachers are paid by the hour. Pay rates range from 220 to 305 baht per hour. The starting rate depends on teacher qualifications and experience. Teachers who work on the weekend receive time and a third times their base rate. Special course teachers receive time and a half or time and a quarter times their base rate, depending on the course. Full time teachers can expect to have 25 to 30 contact hours per week.

Although AUA doesn't assist with teacher accommodation, the branch manager and other teachers can advise new teachers. Single room apartments in Hat Yai range from 2,000 to 6,000 baht per month, usually with a one-month security deposit.
