Our students range in age from teenager to adult. They are highly motivated and fun to teach. Each new student is tested for placement and may enter into one of 16 levels of our curriculum. Regular classes are offered Monday through Thursday, from 5:15 PM to 9:00 PM, and Saturday / Sunday 9:00 AM to 14:30, Friday is our day off. Besides teaching general conversational English, we provide specialized classes such as writing, business English or tailored courses of study.

At present there are three full-time English teachers on the staff, who mostly teach about 20 to 30 hours per week. Pay rates range from 300 baht per hour for teachers-in-training to 380 baht per hour for experienced teachers. Weekend classes are paid at time + 1/3.

Teachers at AUA Songkhla enjoy a comfortable teachers room with lot’s of resources, broadband access, and a small kitchenette (Kettle, Microwave, Fridge). And of course the 4km’s of beach directly opposite the school!
The classrooms are all furnished to a high standard with large whiteboards, full air-con, as well as access to TV, DVD and a Digital video camera.

Living in Songkhla

Songkhla is a small provincial capital in the Deep South of Thailand (Approximately 950 km’s from Bangkok and only 70 km’s from the Malaysian border). The city has a laidback feel to it, with 2 long and popular beaches which makes for a relaxed lifestyle.

Shopping is a little limited, although most basics are easily available. Hat Yai, the regions commercial hub, is only 30km’s away and has all the usual western trappings, including cinemas, malls and fast food restaurants.

There is a large selection of restaurants in Songkhla with freshly caught seafood being the number one draw.

There is a small but active expat community made up of mostly fellow teachers and oil field engineers, hired to service the nearby offshore gas fields. As a result a number of western style bars and restaurants can be found, which help to give Songkhla a cosmopolitan feel.

Accommodation is readily available in the center of Songkhla. Expect to pay up to 5,000 baht a month for a fully furnished 1 room apartment with air con and cable TV. Unfurnished houses start at about 3,000 BHT per month, with a small selection of furnished houses available at a higher cost.

Within easy reach of Hat Yai, Songkhla is easily accessible to many of the beautiful beaches and resorts for which the region is famous. In the province there are also many waterfalls and national parks to explore.

Security Issues

Whilst there is no denying that the current situation in the three provinces to the south (Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat) is of grave concern, these problems have very little bearing on the day to day life of Songkhla. This is quiet city where people from all backgrounds are well integrated and get along well.
