Teaching

— AUA's branch on Srinakarin Road was opened in 1993, at Dusit College on the grounds of the Royal Princess Hotel. The branch soon outgrew these premises and subsequently relocated to its current location in Seri Center shopping mall in 1996. Since the initial opening, Srinakarin branch has grown into a medium-sized branch, with over 1,000 students studying each term.

With recent expansion the branch now utilizes 11 fully equipped, air-conditioned classrooms. The teachers' room, manager's office and administrative office are all separate from the classroom area and the teachers' room provides a peaceful retreat where staff can relax, eat and prepare for their classes. A wide range of teaching resource material is available for staff use in the classroom, as well as a copier and a computer. Each teacher has their own locker to store teaching materials and personal items, and the teachers' room is also equipped with a microwave oven, water heater and cooler, refrigerator, and a computer which are all available for teachers' use. We also subscribe to two English language newspapers.

The students at the Srinakarin branch come from all walks of life: from accountants to zookeepers. The majority are Thai nationals between the ages of 16 and 60, with the majority falling into the 20 to 30 age group. The branch attracts university students along with working people, making both the evening and weekend programs extremely successful.

Srinakarin pays teachers the same rate as all other Bangkok branches. A new teacher starts at 285 baht per hour for the regular program (Monday - Friday) and then moves to 300 baht/hour following their probationary period (3 months). An annual increase follows to a maximum of 350 baht/hour. A differential is paid on Sundays where teachers receive 500 baht per hour. A teacher at Srinakarin can expect to work up to 30 classroom hours per week and the branch operates on a schedule of 7 weekday terms per year with Monday -Thursday classes, and 7 weekend terms per year with Saturday/Sunday classes. The weekday and weekend terms run concurrently, are six weeks in duration, and come with a week long break between each term.

Seri Center is a shopping mall with lots of small shops, an IT center, fast food outlets, restaurants, movie theaters, banks and a large supermarket. A five minute walk away is Seacon Square, which is one of the largest shopping malls in Asia. Access to Srinakarin branch has recently been made easier with Bangkok's new mass-transit skytrain system only 15 minutes away, and there are plans to extend the system bringing it even closer. Being on the eastern side of Bangkok, access to some of Thailand's famous beach resorts such as Pattaya and Rayong is very convenient. Indeed, many teachers elect to get away from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok in the interim week by heading out to the Eastern Seaboard. Also near Seri Center, is Rama IX Park - a beautifully maintained park where many people go for a day out. Accommodations in the area are abundant, with rental prices starting at 3,000 baht per month. All of this makes Srinakarin branch a very enjoyable and convenient place to work.
