The English Access Microscholarship Program for the Regional Teachers In conjunction with the U.S. Embassy, AUA recently conducted a four-day intensive teacher training program at the Montien Hotel in Bangkok from 3 - 6 March 2015. The 42 participants hailed from five ASEAN countries: Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and Cambodia. The participants were primarily English teachers currently working with the English Access Microscholarship Program, commonly referred to as “Access,” and funded by the U.S. State Department. The Access program provides a foundation of English language skills to bright, economically disadvantaged 13–20 year old students worldwide through afterschool and intensive programming. Access students gain an appreciation for U.S. culture and democratic values, increase their ability to participate successfully in the socio - economic development of their countries, and gain the ability to compete for and participate in future U.S. exchange and study programs. The goal of the training was to provide current and potential Access teachers with an opportunity to develop their communicative language practice, increase their awareness of American culture, and build a sustainable community of practice. The training is augmented by an AUA-moderated online component established during the training to be sustained indefinitely in an effort to support a regional network of Access teachers.
